Books to the Sky

“Books to the ceiling, Books to the sky, My pile of books is a mile high. How I love them! How I need them! I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.” ― Arnold Lobel

ZI

So you’ve survived the zombie apocalypse, what now? You’re going to need a job. Why not try Zombie Inc., the largest corporation in the United Five-States? Your rent, food, clothing, utilities, healthcare, and benefits are all conveniently taken out of your paycheck so you don’t have to worry. Plus with the handy seven day work week, there’s no need to have a social life!

It’s been 26 years since the plague that turned most of humanity into zombies. Zombie Inc. (ZI) has found a way to turn a profit by using the very things that destroyed the previous society. Their security systems have gone from technology for keeping out zombies to using zombies to keep out other humans. ZI employs most of the citizens in the United Five-States and they control the government. Born the year of the plague, Dillalia has never even seen a zombie before transferring to Assessment, the department they call out when something goes wrong. Dill’s training under Carl, an older survivor, has opened her eyes to many things. And she’s starting to suspect that ZI is running out of zombies.

Chris Dougherty’s take on zombie apocalypse is a unique look at the life after survival. Excerpts from Zombie Inc.’s employee handbook in between chapters are an interesting way to frame the world the characters inhabit. One group of employees, the Wranglers, are rough and crude so their language is as well. There are some nasty, gory descriptions in parts And yet both the language and the gore seem appropriate. I found myself emotionally caught up in the characters’ lives and I’m so glad I gave this book a shot.

Sounds hilarious! How have I not read this? I’ll download now.

  2. There is definitely a dark humor throughout the book. At the same time, heart wrenching situations.
